The story of Gareth Jones, an ambitious young Welsh journalist who in 1933 decides to travel to Moscow to interview Stalin. In Moscow he meets a young journalist Ada Brooks (Vanessa Kirby), thanks to whom he discovers the terrifying truth behind the Soviet "utopia". Young Jones's journalistic investigation quickly turns into a deadly journey. He decides to share his discoveries with a young, aspiring writer - George Orwell.
